Overview
Rhythm of War, the fourth book in the Stormlight Archive, continues Brandon Sanderson's sprawling epic of magic, religion, and survival on the storm-battered world of Roshar. The novel picks up in the aftermath of Oathbringer's revelations: the Knights Radiant have returned, bringing both hope and danger; ancient magical forces are awakening; and the human coalition led by Dalinar Kholin struggles to unite fractured nations against existential threats. The book expands the scope from previous volumes, introducing perspectives from the enslaved Parshendi people, revealing the complexities of the Unmade (divine horrors), and deepening exploration of mental illness, redemption, and what it means to be human. At its heart, Rhythm of War examines how individuals—broken, traumatized, and burdened by impossible choices—can still choose to act with honor and compassion, even when victory seems impossible and the cost is unimaginably high. The novel oscillates between intimate character struggles and cosmic-scale conflicts, grounding theology and magic in the emotional reality of soldiers, surgeons, scholars, and singers grappling with war's devastation and the seductive whispers of darker paths.
Set primarily in and around Urithiru, the ancient tower that serves as humanity's refugee and command center, the narrative follows multiple viewpoint characters whose stories interweave: Kaladin's journey from elite soldier to healer confronting suicidal despair; Shallan's fragmentation into multiple personalities and her navigation of espionage and moral corruption; Navani's transformation into both a Bondsmith and a scholar-warrior capable of weapons design; Venli's journey from traitor to the possibility of redemption as a listener Radiant; and Dalinar's escalating struggles with his role as both human general and wielder of Bondsmith powers that bridge human and divine realms. The tower itself becomes a battleground when the enemy—Fused warriors and singer soldiers led by the ancient Raboniel—breach its defenses through both military assault and the corruption of its governing spren, the Sibling. With Radiants unconscious, fabrials disabled, and Navani imprisoned, the tower's fall seems inevitable until Kaladin, pushed to the absolute limits of his physical and mental endurance, awakens in ways no one anticipated and humanity's scattered forces begin an extraordinary escape and counteroffensive that culminates in a god becoming mortal and a contest of champions set to determine the war's outcome.
Plot Summary
Rhythm of War opens with Navani managing her husband King Gavilar's mysterious activities in the weeks before the Hearthstone mission. When she discovers him meeting with strange figures discussing glowing spheres and connections to other worlds, Gavilar dismisses her intellectually and cruelly, claiming she cannot understand his grand vision. During a grand feast he has arranged, the Parshendi assassinate Gavilar, and Navani—despite minimal grief—recovers a pouch of mysterious spheres from his body before the kingdom falls into chaos.
Weeks later, the Fourth Bridge—Navani's revolutionary flying platform—descends to rescue refugees from Hearthstone, where Kaladin has discovered the Herdazian resistance general the Mink hiding among them. Kaladin battles a powerful Fused and works with his father Lirin, a surgeon who abhors violence, to evacuate people before the flying ship carries them to safety. Meanwhile, Shallan has infiltrated a group called the Sons of Honor through an elaborate undercover operation, only to realize they may have a spy close to Dalinar. She abandons the mission when cultists claim to have "a source far closer" to the king, alarming her with the possibility of a mole in Dalinar's inner circle.
Shallan is subsequently kidnapped by a separate faction serving Ialai Sadeas, a highprincess who has taken control of the Sons of Honor and operates a shadow network of extortion and control. In Ialai's chambers, Shallan encounters Mraize, a Ghostblood operative who reveals that his organization—distinct from the Sons of Honor—has been eliminating rival conspirators. Ialai dies under mysterious circumstances before revealing more information, leaving Shallan suspicious that Mraize orchestrated her death to prevent disclosure. Shallan recovers Ialai's notebook, which contains references to the Ghostbloods' true purpose: establishing trade routes through Shadesmar (the spiritual realm) to distribute Stormlight to other worlds, circumventing magical limitations that bind Investiture to specific worlds. Mraize later contacts Shallan and assigns her to infiltrate Lasting Integrity, the fortress of the honorspren, to locate and extract a person named Restares, hinting that this mission will reveal secrets about Shallan's own suppressed childhood memories.
Kaladin's removal from active duty by Dalinar—ostensibly due to battle fatigue and mental instability—devastates him despite the psychological validity of the assessment. He initially struggles to find purpose but eventually redirects his energy toward helping other soldiers suffering from similar trauma, establishing a group therapy model using sunlight, connection, and shared experience rather than isolation. When his family is brought to Urithiru, he builds them a luxurious suite and surgical clinic, finally accepting that his father's dream of making him a surgeon might align with his own capacity for healing.
Venli, a Parshendi who bonded with a Voidspren named Ulim and accepted Voidlight powers, continues working for the Fused invaders while secretly planning liberation of her people. Learning through her new connection to ancient stone that thousands of listeners survive in the eastern Shattered Plains, Venli begins assembling a network of singers who wish to escape Fused control. Through visions and conversations with her spren Timbre, she gradually shifts toward embracing her capacity for genuine compassion and honor, though she struggles with self-loathing over her foundational betrayal of her sister Eshonai and her people.
Adolin leads an expedition to Shadesmar (the spiritual realm) with Shallan and several Radiants to negotiate with the honorspren and repair the breach created by previous Radiant actions. The journey reveals that Shallan's communication cube has been compromised, and someone in their party—later identified as Beryl—has been reporting to the Ghostbloods. Upon arrival at Lasting Integrity, Adolin discovers that the honorspren's High Judge is Kelek, one of the original Heralds who has hidden his identity for centuries. A trial by witness begins, with the honorspren presenting grievances about the Radiants' ancient betrayal during the Recreance. Despite Adolin's passionate defense and the revelation that Maya, his supposedly-broken Shardblade, can still speak and testify that spren chose their bonds, the trial initially appears rigged against him. However, Notum's unexpected support and Maya's powerful testimony shift the honorspren's perspective, suggesting that healing between spren and humans may be possible.
Shallan, meanwhile, discovers that Restares is actually Kelek, a Herald masquerading as an ordinary figure. When Mraize provides her with a specialized dagger designed to trap a Herald's soul, Shallan initially plans to assassinate Kelek. However, through a series of internal confrontations with her fragmented personalities (Veil, Radiant, and an emerging identity called Formless), Shallan integrates her traumatic memories and suppressed identities into a more coherent whole. She realizes that Formless is not a separate persona but a manifestation of her own protection mechanisms against unbearable pain. Instead of killing Kelek, she attempts to share information about the Ghostbloods' intentions, though she is imprisoned before completing her revelation. By the mission's end, Adolin has proven his worth to some honorspren, potentially opening a path for renewed bonds, while Shallan has chosen to break from the Ghostbloods despite their threats and leverage over her family.
As the narrative progresses, Navani's Fourth Bridge completes a successful military campaign, and the coalition's forces deploy to Emul where they achieve a major victory. However, mysterious messages and increasingly strange fabrials suggest enemy intelligence operations within Urithiru itself. When the tower comes under invasion, it becomes clear that multiple factors have aligned: a captured spanreed embedded in the tower allowing enemy coordination, suppression fabrials that disable Radiant powers, and Raboniel—an ancient Fused commander—infiltrating with a massive strike force to corrupt the tower's governing spren, the Sibling, and thus invert its protective mechanisms.
