AFTERWORD

Chapter 100

90. One Chance

Overview

Navani immerses herself in laboratory research with Raboniel, conducting experiments on Investiture and the strange black sand. Raboniel reveals knowledge of other worlds accessible through Shadesmar and hints at her plans to unmake the Sibling rather than merely kill it. After a symbolic musical performance honoring their collaboration, Navani learns the Sibling is dying and desperately contacts it, discovering a crucial insight: Investiture operates as vibration, offering a potential path forward.

Summary

Navani has abandoned her duties as queen to focus entirely on scientific research in her laboratory. Raboniel joins her experiments, and the two develop a collaborative rhythm despite recognizing they remain enemies. Raboniel casually reveals that the black sand comes from offworld and that she herself is bound to Braize (Damnation), a planet in orbit. She explains that other worlds are accessible through Shadesmar but warns Navani away from Braize, describing it as barren and populated by unstable souls. When Navani asks if she could visit other worlds, Raboniel confirms it is theoretically possible. The two conduct an experiment using lightning channeled by the stormform guard Mizthla to attempt polarity-swapping on gemstones filled with Voidlight, but it fails to produce anti-Voidlight. Raboniel later admits, through her rhythms, that she never truly intended to kill Odium—she was misleading Navani about her plans. She cryptically states her true goal is to unmake the Sibling and control Urithuru, and that this is the best path to ending the war. Before departing, Raboniel gifts Navani the title Voice of Lights and has two nimbleform singers create a musical performance on metal plates tuned to Honor's and Odium's harmonized tones, which Raboniel accompanies. The performance is beautiful despite the discord of its component elements. Afterward, Navani touches the Sibling's crystal vein and makes mental contact with it. The Sibling reveals it is dying, afraid, and unable to bond with the Radiant who could save it because of the barrier preventing its action. In desperation, Navani begins recording ideas to help. As she sits at her desk, she realizes the vibrations from the musical performance created patterns in the sand left from her earlier experiment—patterns that differ depending on which tone dominated. This revelation strikes her: Investiture is fundamentally vibrational in nature, suggesting anti-Investiture might be found through understanding vibration itself.
