AFTERWORD

Chapter 121

108. Moments

Overview

Navani flees from Moash after being gravely wounded, but Raboniel—barely alive—intercepts him to buy her time. Meanwhile, Kaladin falls through the storm having lost his will to fight, while Dalinar witnesses this from within the storm itself and desperately seeks a way to save him. In the tower, Venli reveals her Radiant status to Leshwi while humans sacrifice themselves to protect the other Radiants from execution.

Summary

Navani stumbles through the hallway bleeding heavily from Moash's attack, moving toward the crystal pillar while Moash pursues her with inexorable calm, claiming he has become his best self through freedom from pain and that he killed a friend—presumably Kaladin—without feeling. As Moash approaches, Raboniel's body suddenly moves; the Fused grabs his foot and launches herself at him, using the anti-Voidlight dagger to drain his Stormlight and buy Navani time. Navani reaches the pillar chamber and calls out to the Sibling, who responds with the Rhythm of War—a strange harmonious and discordant tone. Simultaneously, Kaladin falls through the storm, exhausted and spiritually broken, having pushed himself to the point where he can no longer access his oaths or Syl's support. He closes his eyes and lets go of Syl's hand. Dalinar, flying above with Lyn, feels a disturbance through the Stormfather and learns that Kaladin has entered the storm for the final time—not escaped, but dying. Witnessing Kaladin's fall through the storm, Dalinar realizes Kaladin has given up and begs the Stormfather for help. The Stormfather slows time briefly using the moment between, giving Kaladin respite in an impossible calm. When even that fails to rouse Kaladin's will, Dalinar—in the Spiritual Realm where visions occur—forges a connection, attempting to unite Kaladin with something, though what remains unclear. In the tower, Venli witnesses the Pursuer's soldiers beginning to slaughter civilians to reach the captive Radiants. Leshwi explains that Raboniel no longer needs the Radiants after questioning one of them. Moved by the humans' defiant self-sacrifice, Venli draws Stormlight and begins glowing, revealing her status as a Radiant. Leshwi immediately grabs her face in shock and fury, demanding to know what Venli has done.
