111. Unchained

Kaladin achieves his Fourth Ideal and becomes a full Radiant, manifesting his Shardplate and windspren, and uses his powers to save his father Lirin from falling to his death. Simultaneously, Navani bonds with the Sibling spren by discovering the song of science itself—the harmonic convergence of Honor and Cultivation—and gains immense power to resist Moash.

Kaladin plunges through the black storm surrounding the tower, surrounded by joyful windspren. Spending most of his time in the place between moments, he searches for his father falling below him. Multiple windspren bond with him, transforming into a glowing gauntlet and lines of light. He descends toward the ground with his hand outstretched, nearly catching his father as they fall. In a parallel scene, Navani lies bleeding from Moash's attack near a pillar. The Sibling spren questions her worthiness as a Bondsmith, but Navani argues that strength comes from uniting different perspectives. She realizes she can hear only Odium's tone and inverts it, creating anti-Voidlight that freezes Moash in place. The Sibling reveals it cannot hear its own song because its father Honor is dead. Navani sings Honor's song from within herself, then achieves harmony with the Sibling by combining Honor's order with Cultivation's growth—discovering the song of science itself. The Sibling accepts her Words, bonding with her and flooding her with power. She confronts Moash with newfound strength. Lirin hangs in the air, believing he is dead, until he sees Kaladin descending as a glowing Shardbearer surrounded by thousands of windspren, holding back the storm. Kaladin catches his father in his arms, and they reconcile about their conflicting philosophies. Lirin reveals he painted the shash glyph on his forehead to show faith in his son, and Kaladin's slave brands flake away, leaving clean skin. Kaladin tells Lirin they must protect the tower, each in their own way.
