AFTERWORD

Chapter 122

109. Emulsifier

Overview

Kaladin experiences a profound hallucination-induced vision while exhausted, reliving the battlefield where his brother Tien died in his youth. Through an encounter with Tien's spirit or manifestation, Kaladin confronts his guilt over deaths he could not prevent and comes to a new understanding of Connection and meaning. He speaks the Fourth Ideal of the Knights Radiant, accepting that he cannot protect everyone, which causes a dramatic surge of power.

Summary

Kaladin wakes in a small tent on a battlefield from his past, disoriented and hallucinating due to exhaustion. He recognizes the scene as a battle under Brightlord Amaram's command where he served as a youth. A young squadleader named Varth struggles to hold an undermanned, under-equipped line against an advancing enemy. Kaladin watches as his younger brother Tien, appearing as he was in life, volunteers to help defend the position despite the hopelessness of the situation. As the enemy charge begins, the scene dissolves and Kaladin encounters Tien again—now appearing as a fully grown man while Kaladin becomes a child. Tien comforts Kaladin and helps him process his grief over Teft's recent death, reframing loss through the lens of Connection and shared moments rather than failure. Tien gives Kaladin a small wooden horse and then vanishes. Kaladin falls into darkness, calling for Syl. Surrounded by many pinpricks of light, he distinguishes Syl from the others and pulls her close. Syl admits she has forgotten the Words and cannot help him, but Kaladin assures her that her presence is enough. Together they break through the moment between worlds back into reality, and Kaladin speaks his Fourth Ideal: "I accept it, Stormfather! I accept that there will be those I cannot protect!" The Stormfather accepts his Words, and the sky fills with pure light.
