Chapter 104
94. Sacrifice
Overview
Shallan confronts the fragmentation of her mind as the personas of Formless, Veil, and Radiant collapse into unified consciousness. On the day of Adolin's trial, she nearly commits murder as part of a Ghostblood assignment but ultimately chooses to integrate her splintered identity and reject the path of deception and violence.
Summary
Formless wakes before Adolin's trial, dismissing his attempts to encourage her to embrace Shallan's strengths. She sketches the judge's home, planning to kill Kelek as the Ghostbloods instructed. Pattern tries to warn her and mentions Wit's message about deserving love and trust, but Formless silences him. Disguised as the honorspren Lusintia using Lightweaving, she makes her way through Lasting Integrity toward the High Judge's quarters. As she approaches the door with Mraize's knife, Veil materializes—a manifestation of Shallan's protective dissociation—and challenges her, revealing that Formless is not a fourth persona but a lie Shallan created to escape her pain. Veil uses Adolin's earlier metaphors about strength to argue that Shallan's capacity to endure emotional torment makes her strong, not weak. Shallan breaks down and finally confronts the traumatic memory she has been suppressing: she killed her first spren in a moment of emotional devastation, not her mother (as previously believed) or Ialai (which Radiant did). As Shallan accepts this truth, Veil integrates back into her, transferring all protected memories and skills. Shallan enters Kelek's study resolved not to kill him, offering instead to trade information about the Ghostbloods. Kelek initially listens, but Lusintia and other honorspren burst in, with Sekeir suggesting Kelek is experiencing weakness and must be sequestered, cutting off any negotiation.
