AFTERWORD

Chapter 116

103. The Legend You Live

Overview

Venli organizes an escape plan for listener refugees while wrestling with Timbre's faith in her, then offers to help Kaladin's family flee the tower. Navani, devastated by Raboniel's betrayal and the discovery that anti-Voidlight can kill spren, finds a dagger with a remaining charge of the weapon. Moash arrives at Raboniel's command to kill Kaladin and destroy the final node, departing with a spren-killing dagger that Navani inadvertently enabled. Kaladin, accepting his approaching doom, walks openly to confront the Pursuer in the tower's atrium as a highstorm approaches.

Summary

Venli leads a group of fifteen listeners through the Oathgates, planning to use Raboniel's writ to escape Urithiru and reach the Shattered Plains to find her mother. Despite Timbre's insistence on her worth, Venli struggles with self-doubt and considers herself an accident. After she orders singers to move inside before the approaching highstorm, she rejoins her group and proposes offering Kaladin and his family passage out of the tower using the writ's authority. Her team, including Mazish and Dul, hum agreement, seeing strategic value in gaining a Windrunner's assistance. Venli gives the writ to Mazish and sets out to find Kaladin before he undertakes his desperate plan.

Navani remains confined in her destroyed office, plagued by guilt over her research enabling Raboniel to discover the tone that kills spren. She prays for guidance, only to overhear Moash—now serving as Odium's instrument—negotiating with Raboniel. Moash refuses to kill Kaladin directly but offers instead to "ruin" him and render him unable to interfere, in exchange for Navani's execution. Raboniel agrees and provides Moash with a spren-killing dagger and a diagram locating the final node. When Navani confronts Moash about his treason, he responds with bitter accusations about her son Elhokar's neglect of Kaladin's hometown, saying he is no longer human but a Voidbringer, and departs using Stormlight to fly toward the lower levels. After his departure, Navani discovers among the wreckage the second diamond dagger Raboniel used to kill her daughter—still containing a charge of anti-Voidlight.

Kaladin descends toward the ground floor, overcome by a sense of inevitable fate and exhaustion. He emerges in uniform, refusing to hide, and strides through the tower's central corridors as humans and singers—many bearing shash glyphs on their foreheads—gather behind him in hope. He recognizes that the legend they believe in is a version of him that has already died, yet decides to resurrect it one final time. When he reaches the atrium, Syl responds to his mental call, returning to him though weakened and traumatized. She immediately transforms into a Kholin-blue uniform to stand with him. Kaladin checks the flying gauntlet at his belt and moves into the vast atrium as Heavenly Ones hover above and the space empties of civilians. The Pursuer appears in the chamber's center, blocking the path to the infirmary, and immediately charges at Kaladin for the final confrontation.
