AFTERWORD

Chapter 49

I-4. Vyre

Overview

Moash, now calling himself Vyre and fully bonded to Odium, works hauling marble in a quarry outside Kholinar while contemplating his newfound emotional detachment. He is summoned by Odium in a vision and tasked with transporting ground forces to Urithiru and devising a way to psychologically break Kaladin by manipulating their shared connection through dreams and visions.

Summary

Vyre (formerly Moash) conducts experiments throwing his Honorblade in a quarry, having observed that Prince Adolin can throw Shardblades without being a Radiant. He ponders this puzzle while working with a group of singers. Khen, one of his companions, announces her departure, wanting to live without constantly raiding and fighting. Vyre explains that she remains emotionally chained to Odium, unlike himself, who has surrendered his negative emotions entirely and claims to feel no anger, disappointment, or guilt. When Khen suggests that Vyre's obsession with hunting Kaladin contradicts his claim of being unchained, Vyre admits this is his last remaining chain—the need for Kaladin to acknowledge that Vyre is right and Kaladin is wrong. Vyre continues his labor hauling marble into Kholinar, where the city has settled under singer rule with humans and singers intermixing. He discovers workers are constructing special housing for Fused and decides to help, hauling stones despite not being asked. While gathering additional marble from a second quarry, Odium pulls Vyre into a vision, manifesting as a towering figure on a golden field. Odium reveals their connection has grown so strong that storms are no longer needed to bring him into visions. He orders Vyre to Urithiru to transport ground forces and transport them across gaps where the Oathgates cannot function. Odium then confides that Kaladin has become an even greater threat than expected by leaving the battle, and asks Vyre to devise a way to break him psychologically. Odium cannot strike Kaladin directly and needs Vyre's help. Vyre realizes that Odium can exploit their shared past connection and dreams to show Kaladin visions, and he volunteers to manipulate Kaladin through nightly dreams, driving him toward despair and suicide.
