Chapter 132
Epilogue: Dirty Tricks
Overview
In this epilogue, Wit encounters Odium and learns that his memories stored in his Breaths are vulnerable to the new Odium. The chapter then loops, suggesting Wit's memories may have been damaged or altered, leaving his fate ambiguous as the book concludes.
Summary
Wit walks through Elhokar's palace on the Shattered Plains, performing coin tricks while philosophizing about storytelling and illusion to an audience of corrupted windspren. He explains that magic-based illusions are inferior to clever sleight-of-hand tricks because the audience's willing belief in a fake illusion creates something powerful—they knowingly participate in the lie. Design, a peppy spren on his coat, interrupts his musings before departing. Wit then senses Odium's presence and makes himself available in Elhokar's former sitting room. When Odium arrives, Wit boasts about the contract he influenced through Dalinar, suggesting the Almighty outsmarted Rayse. Odium threatens eternal vengeance and declares his champion will defeat Dalinar's. During their exchange, Odium suddenly shifts tone and asks Wit a peculiar question about whom he would choose as a champion—an oddly thoughtful query that seems out of character. Odium then realizes he can harm Wit by destroying the Breaths that store his excess memories, exploiting a loophole in the old Pact. Terror grips Wit as Odium begins to act. The scene then resets: Wit is again in the palace hallway, coin in hand, beginning his tricks anew. He notices inconsistencies—a coin half slipped from his belt, Design missing, vague memories of events, and incorrect dialogue during his second encounter with Odium. He experiences disorientation and uncertainty, though he tries to convince himself everything is proceeding as planned. The chapter ends ambiguously, leaving unclear whether Wit's memories have been damaged, altered, or destroyed by Odium.
