Chapter 44
40. In for All
Overview
As Radiants across Urithiru suddenly collapse unconscious, Kaladin discovers his Gravitation powers are failing while the tower comes under invasion by Fused and enemy forces who have seized the Oathgates. Navani learns the Sibling—the tower's bondsmith spren—is under attack and the spanreeds are disabled, forcing her to organize a ground defense. Kaladin, emotionally overwhelmed and physically weakened, ultimately accepts he cannot fight and retreats with his family as the tower falls.
Summary
Teft collapses suddenly in a winehouse, and Kaladin rushes to help, finding the man unresponsive with dilated eyes and trembling limbs. When Kaladin attempts to Lash him lighter for transport to the Edgedancers' clinic, his Gravitation powers inexplicably fail—though other Surgebinding abilities still work. The situation worsens when they discover multiple Radiants unconscious across the tower: Edgedancers at the clinic, a Stoneward in the hallway, another at the clinic awaiting treatment. Kaladin's spren Syl becomes difficult to reach, her mind cloudy. Rlain reports Fused have infiltrated the tower, and from a window Kaladin spots hundreds of Fused descending on Urithiru. Meanwhile, Navani interrogates a mute captive named Dabbid who delivered a spanreed. When she attempts to use it, the Sibling—the missing bondsmith spren—writes frantically that the enemy is attacking and the tower is in danger. The Lightweaver Red collapses unconscious as the message warns of imminent threat. Navani discovers all spanreeds are disabled, making external communication impossible. She organizes runners to alert the tower's garrisons and moves to the map room. Dabbid shows her that the Sibling communicates through garnet veins in the stone; she gives him his freedom. Kaladin reaches his family's clinic where his father Lirin is treating fallen Radiants. Kaladin retrieves a surgery knife, intending to fight the invaders despite his severe anxiety, tremors, and emotional instability. His father argues that fighting will doom them all, reminding Kaladin the family will be executed if he attacks the Fused. The tower's defenses have failed—most Shardbeaters and Surgebinders are either unconscious or absent. Kaladin surrenders the knife to his father and retreats with his family, accepting that Urithiru has already been lost.
