Summary
The chapter opens with Kaladin in profound despair following Teft's death, believing himself a failure and a lie. His spiral is interrupted when the Pursuer attacks him while he grieves. Something shifts in Kaladin during the combat—his eyes glow with an unusual yellowish-red light as he moves with devastating speed and precision, killing the Pursuer by immobilizing him against a window and using infused ground to tear his head from his body.
Simultaneously, Navani executes her trap against Raboniel. She activates a painrial device that paralyzes both of them, then stabs Raboniel with a dagger. Raboniel survives the initial attack, her soul not fully departing like her daughter's had. Before dying, Raboniel reveals her true goal: she wanted to end the war through any means, preferring even a human victory to endless conflict. She urges Navani to flee with the notebook containing knowledge of how to permanently kill Fused. Navani is then attacked by Moash, who throws a knife into her chest. Venli observes all this, noting the strange intensity of Kaladin's power and the respect shown by Leshwi and the other Heavenly Ones.
Kaladin pursues the remaining Heavenly One who holds his father to the tower's roof. Operating in a haze of grief and barely aware of his actions, he fights through opposition, ultimately reaching the top of Urithiru. The final Heavenly One, panicked, throws Lirin into the raging storm below. Kaladin, recognizing the ledge from a previous moment in his past, jumps after his father into the tempest.
