Chapter 10
9. Contradictions
Overview
Kaladin battles through a burning manor to reach the cellar, where he discovers Moash has killed Roshone and two other prisoners. As Kaladin confronts his former friend, Moash psychologically manipulates him into despair, nearly driving him to surrender to suicidal ideation. Renarin arrives with brilliant light, causing a vision of an alternate Moash to appear before the real Moash flees. Meanwhile, Shallan and her team search Ialai's quarters, discovering a hidden notebook concealed behind ancient carved stones.
Summary
Kaladin enters a burning wooden manor to rescue someone, using his Stormlight to navigate the flames and reach an underground cellar. He discovers two chained prisoners: Jeber, a man from his youth, and an unknown refugee—both killed by Shardblade. In the alcove beyond, Moash stands holding Brightlord Roshone with a knife to his throat. Moash slits Roshone's throat before Kaladin can intervene, killing the man who sent Tien to his death. When Kaladin confronts Moash with his Sylspear, Moash surrenders and begins a psychological assault, reminding Kaladin of his failures and suggesting suicide as the only path to peace. As Kaladin's Stormlight depletes and despair overtakes him, a brilliant light floods the chamber from the doorway. A transparent vision of an alternate Moash—standing tall in blue, protected by companions—appears opposite the real Moash. This phantom summons a Shardspear, causing the corrupted Moash to scream and flee up the tunnel. Renarin emerges from the light, revealing the Fused have retreated and the ship is ready to depart. In a parallel sequence, Shallan, Adolin, Gaz, and Red search the quarters of the dead Ialai Stormblessed for secrets. While Gaz and Red gather obvious documents, Shallan uses her artistic perception and Pattern's help to discover carved glyphs in the ancient stone foundation beneath the room. Following a pattern related to Shinovar (connected to a Shin wine clue Ialai provided), she locates a loose stone and retrieves a small hidden notebook, which she pockets before leaving.
