Chapter 9
8. Surrender
Overview
Shallan confronts Ialai Sadeas in her chambers, discovering through their tense conversation that Ialai believes Shallan works for the Ghostbloods rather than Dalinar. Adolin arrives with soldiers to capture Ialai, but the highprincess dies from apparent poison before she can be interrogated further, leaving questions about whether the Ghostbloods orchestrated her death. Meanwhile, Kaladin battles a Fused and singers at a burning manor, discovers a strange Voidlight fabrial that suppresses Radiant powers, and learns that Roshone may still be trapped inside.
Summary
Shallan, in her Veil persona, enters Ialai Sadeas's chambers to confront the highprincess about her treason. Ialai appears weathered and resigned to her fate. Through a wine-tasting metaphor, Ialai reveals she knows Shallan is an operative—but believes Shallan serves Mraize and the Ghostbloods, not Dalinar. Ialai claims the Ghostbloods have killed other conspirators (Thanadal and Vamah) and hints at secrets about Gavilar and the Sons of Honor, mentioning that the Ghostbloods seek more than mere "power." When Shallan attempts to summon her Shardblade, Adolin arrives with soldiers and they take Ialai into custody using Lightweaving to disguise her. However, as they prepare to transport her, Ialai dies suddenly—apparently from blackbane poison—before she can reveal more information. Shallan suspects the Ghostbloods may have ensured her death and fears they have an operative within their own group. She begins searching Ialai's chambers for answers. In a parallel scene, Kaladin engages a Fused and singers attacking the manor. The Fused uses a strange Voidlight-powered fabrial that suppresses Radiant powers, forcing Kaladin to fight without his abilities. He kills the Fused and most of the soldiers through skilled spear combat alone. Lift disables the fabrial, restoring powers, and reveals an old lighteyed man in beggar's clothing (Roshone) entered the manor with Godeke before the attack. Kaladin agrees to search for him while Lift ensures Godeke recovers and brings the mysterious fabrial to Navani.
