Chapter 11
Chapter 9
Overview
Donut receives her celestial boon prize from the ninth floor: permanently glowing blue radiant claws that can cut through anything and slice ghosts. She also opens two spell books—Ice Slick for casting and a matched-set crupper armor piece—which triggers an extended, morally complex item description about heroism and the cost of her brutal kill on the previous floor.
Summary
Donut discovers her prize has given her claws a permanent celestial modification: they glow brilliant blue, are impossibly sharp, and can harm ghosts, but she cannot turn off the glow or control when they deploy. Mordecai explains the boon is permanent and has raised her Claw skill to level 17. Concerned about accidentally harming Carl and damaging equipment, Donut accepts Rosetta's suggestion of claw caps, which Rosetta purchases in purple to mute the blue glow. Donut then opens an Ice Slick spell book (level 5, special edition) and a new crupper—the Crupper of the Benevolent Champion—as part of a matched set with her cloak. The crupper's description contains an extended philosophical monologue from the game itself, reflecting on the moral weight of Donut's brutal kill that eliminated an entire group of enemies, including Sanderson Pinkstaff, a gnoll mercenary with a family. The description wrestles with heroism versus atrocity, drawing parallels to the game's own nature and asking whether true heroes exist when they cause collateral suffering. The crupper provides +20% to Constitution, raises Find Weakened to level 10, and allows Donut to raise one spell to level 16; she chooses Puddle Jumper. The chapter ends with Mordecai indicating it is now Carl's turn to receive his rewards.
