Chapter 8

Carl and his companions examine the magical accessories they received from the Egyptian-themed dungeon floor. Donut shows off her new headdress and receives numerous boxes from her achievements, including summoning scrolls for emergency gremlins and powerful magical items. As the final celestial box opens, Donut experiences a mysterious and painful transformation in her paw that Mordecai recognizes as significant.

Carl asks Donut about her new accessories. She displays the Assassin's Veil, an Egyptian beaded headdress with dexterity and precognition benefits, though Mordecai warns that transferring its powers to her tiara could make her an enemy of Sekhmet and therefore of Odette's forces. Carl learns that Mongo and Rend's hats are pet accessories that cannot be drained: the Nemes of Pestilence grants Mongo temporary invulnerability and doubled strength when Carl is in danger, plus a sepsis debuff on bites, while the Wrap of Sekhmet's Compassion gives Rend similar protection plus healing and resurrection abilities. Bigs notes he didn't get a hat because he's a mercenary rather than a pet. Donut begins opening her achievement boxes, which contain mostly mundane items like clothes and healing scrolls, but also many Emergency Gremlin summoning scrolls for vehicle repairs. Her legendary Lorena Bobbitt box contains a quiver of glittering crossbow bolts called the Danforth that anchor targets in place. Another celestial item is revealed: the Crupper of the Benevolent Champion, a chain mail piece matching her champion cloak. As the final celestial godslayer box opens, it forms into the shape of Meatus the god before being struck down by a smoky paw. Donut's own paw begins glowing and changing, causing her pain. When she flexes her claws, they rip the kitchen table in half, indicating a significant physical transformation is occurring. Mordecai recognizes the process and assures her it will be beneficial, though the chapter ends with the transformation still ongoing.
