Overview

Howard receives news that Colonel George Butterworth has died by suicide after being diagnosed with incurable neurological dementia. Howard and Bridget process their grief together, leading to a conversation about the emotional toll of immortality on relationships with mortals.

Summary

Howard and Bridget leave a movie theater on Vulcan after watching zombie films. They receive simultaneous notifications from the coroner's office regarding Colonel George Butterworth's death. At the coroner's office, Dr. Onagi presents them with a note from Butterworth explaining his diagnosis of irreversible neurological degenerative dementia and his decision to end his life painlessly rather than face cognitive decline. The note indicates Butterworth had revoked consent for scanning, making revival impossible. Howard learns the method was a neurotoxin. Back at Bridget's home, Howard reflects on the pattern of loss he experiences as an immortal being, describing mortals as "ephemerals" and expressing anxiety about the inevitable cycle of attachment and abandonment. When Howard suggests leaving to give Bridget space, she asks him to stay. They sit together in silence, and Bridget eventually falls asleep on his shoulder while Howard remains awake with his grief.
