Howard and Bridget successfully deploy Rivendell, a massive floating city on Odin, lowering it into the atmosphere where it achieves stable equilibrium. They transfer their consciousnesses into android bodies to physically explore the city and witness the alien ecosystem, but their moment of wonder is interrupted when a blimp creature attaches itself to the city dome in an apparent mating attempt.

Howard narrates the deployment of Rivendell, Odin's newest floating city—a massive structure several times larger than Marcus' aerial cities, featuring actual buildings, kitchens, and infrastructure as a proof of concept for life-support systems. This is the second iteration; the first sank into the depths and melted. Howard and Bridget oversee the careful lowering of the city using mover plates, with Guppy assisting in the descent. Once Rivendell reaches equilibrium and pressure stabilizes, Howard and Bridget transfer their consciousnesses into android bodies stationed within the city. They exit to a grassy field enclosed by the city's transparent fibrex dome and approach the dome's edge to observe Odin's layered ecosystems—krill, small and large predators, blimps, and mantas floating through different atmospheric layers. Their awe-struck observation is interrupted when a large blimp creature attaches itself to the dome about two-thirds of the way up. Howard and Bridget realize the blimp is exhibiting what appears to be amorous behavior toward the city, much to Bridget's amusement and Howard's bewilderment.
