AFTERWORD

Chapter 79

72.Recovery

Overview

Bob grieves the death of Archimedes over the past month, struggling with the reality that life in Camelot moves on without him. He seeks perspective from Marvin and realizes he has been stuck in a self-imposed rut trying to remain human; deciding it is time to embrace his post-human nature, he takes a final farewell walk through the village before leaving Eden.

Summary

Recovery Bob has spent a difficult month since Archimedes' death, unable to watch the village VR for more than brief moments. He is troubled by how quickly life returns to normal in Camelot despite Archimedes' profound impact on the colony. Bob creates a genetic sample of Archimedes and adds an entry to the monolith on Eden's largest moon, but worries his behavior may be obsessive. Seeking perspective, he visits Marvin's VR environment—a recreation of a small 21st-century town with horses and carriages. During their conversation over coffee, Marvin counsels Bob that grief is a natural part of being alive, even for post-human intelligences, and that other people need not mourn as deeply as he does. Through their discussion, Bob has a realization: he has been clinging to his humanity for seventy years in a rut, and Archimedes' death provides both a clean emotional break and motivation to evolve beyond human limitations and embrace his true post-human nature. Bob then takes a final walk through Camelot as an inconspicuous android, experiencing the village one last time by touching objects, observing children, and savoring the sensory details of the life Archimedes lived there. He passes by Buster's tent without lingering, then leaves the village and Eden forever.
