Chapter 57
50.A Space Odyssey
Overview
Bob visits Marvin to discuss a monolith prank planned for the Deltans, then tours Camelot where Archimedes trains three Deltan apprentices. The colonies have established peaceful trade relationships, though Bob notices Archimedes' lingering health issues from his earlier beating.
Summary
Bob contacts Marvin to share his plan to place a monolith on the largest moon of Delta Eridani—a reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey with dimensions one by four by nine and inscribed writing. Marvin finds the elaborate joke amusing despite knowing the Deltans won't understand the reference initially. Bob then walks through Camelot, observing the community's daily activities and noting that Archimedes has successfully trained three Deltan apprentices from an initial dozen volunteers. The initial tension between Caerleon and Camelot has eased, and trade has flourished, including the exchange of Deltan tubers for crafted tools and labor. However, Bob grows concerned about Archimedes' persistent cough that began after his kidnapping beating. Archimedes reveals the side pain may be permanent from improper bone healing. As they walk to the mesa for the sunset, Bob reflects on how Archimedes has aged noticeably over fifty-seven years, reminiscent of watching a parent grow old. Bob observes that the Deltan landscape remains largely unchanged, with no signs of environmental exploitation or domesticated livestock development.
