Chapter 74

67.Running

Overview

Herschel pilots the Bellerophon in a desperate escape from Earth orbit while dodging coordinated weapon fire from the Others. A direct hit on Cuba kills approximately 150,000 people still awaiting evacuation, while six million refugees crowd the ship's cargo bays. The chapter ends with Will's message that the battle has concluded.

Summary

Herschel oversees the final transport shipments into the Bellerophon's cargo corridor as Neil seals the doors. Once clear of atmosphere, Herschel accelerates hard and maneuvers to put Earth between the ship and the ongoing battle. The Others launch coordinated zap attacks; Herschel uses SCUT (faster-than-light) communications to anticipate and dodge them, but realizes this reveals their FTL capability to the enemy. Neil calculates that one incoming zap will strike Cuba directly—still home to 150,000 people scheduled for pickup an hour later. With only 28 seconds until impact, nothing can be done. The weapon hits, killing the entire population. After sending drones to confirm the devastation, Herschel resumes evacuation procedures and continues accelerating away from the engagement zone. Hours later, safely distant from immediate weapons range, Herschel and Neil discuss their strategic position: if the Others win the battle, they must cram six million people into cargo bays and build stasis pods during transit, risking heavy losses; if they win, they must still eliminate the Others' source world to prevent future attacks. Herschel monitors the refugees—huddled, terrified, waiting for either safe evacuation or sudden death. As the chapter closes, Will sends a text: "It's over."
