Chapter 53
46.City
Overview
Howard pitches Bridget on his idea for a floating android city within a gas bubble in Odin's atmosphere, designed to serve as a potential refuge for human colonies if they face existential threats from the Others. Bridget, initially skeptical, becomes intrigued by the project and agrees to help.
Summary
Howard is in his office examining a hologram of a floating city design when Bridget arrives and asks about it. He explains that inspired by Marcus's flying cities on Poseidon, he has designed a floating city for Odin that would use Earth-pressure air in a prolate spheroid bubble to achieve buoyancy in Odin's 1.5 bar atmosphere, avoiding the need for SURGE coils. The structure would be made of carbon-fiber reinforced materials. When Bridget questions who would live in it, Howard proposes that they could inhabit it using android bodies. Bridget initially jokes about the amount of free time Howard has. Howard then turns serious, explaining that given the threat posed by the Others and the devastation at Delta Pavonis, this city could serve as a hiding place for human colonies to avoid extinction. Bridget recognizes that the Bobs are deeply concerned about humanity's survival. Howard acknowledges his limited involvement in the war effort and sees this project as his contribution. Bridget reconsiders the proposal, noting that they would be safe test pilots since androids cannot truly be harmed, and they would have a front-row seat to observe Odin's life. She agrees to help Howard with the printing project to construct the city.
