Overview
A Court of Wings and Ruin follows Feyre Archeron's journey from prisoner and pawn to High Lady of the Night Court as the realm faces annihilation from Hybern's invasion. Two years after the events of A Court of Mist and Fury, Feyre infiltrates the Spring Court under the guise of a broken, traumatized girl, secretly working to expose the treachery of the High Priestess Ianthe and gather intelligence on Hybern's military might. Poisoned with faebane and betrayed by those around her, she flees to Rhysand and the Night Court, where she learns she is his mate and discovers her true identity as a High Lady with stolen powers from multiple High Lords. As Hybern's two-hundred-thousand-strong army marches toward Prythian seeking to breach the ancient wall separating the human and Fae realms, Feyre must unite the fractious High Lords, navigate deadly political alliances, and make impossible sacrifices to save both worlds. The novel explores themes of power, identity, loyalty, and the personal cost of war, culminating in a devastating final battle where ancient forces are unleashed, allies are lost, the Cauldron threatens to unmake reality itself, and Rhysand sacrifices his life to save the world, only to be restored through the collective power of the High Lords' united magic.
Plot Summary
The novel opens with Rhysand surveying a killing field two years before the events of the main story, reflecting on the costs of war. When the narrative proper begins, Feyre Archeron is living in Tamlin's Spring Court manor, secretly maintaining her magical abilities while projecting an image of a traumatized, powerless girl. She communicates sporadically with Rhysand through their mating bond but maintains deep cover to avoid detection. When Hybern's emissaries—the twin royals Dagdan and Brannagh, along with the resurrected warrior Jurian—arrive at the Spring Court, Feyre orchestrates an elaborate deception. She positions herself as the lady of the house, uses her daemati powers to defend Tamlin and Lucien from mental invasion, and manipulates the situation to expose the treachery around her. She discovers that the High Priestess Ianthe has been working with Hybern and learns of three gaps in the wall between the human and Fae realms.
Feyre's plans become complicated when she discovers Ianthe sexually assaulting the magically enslaved Lucien. In her rage, Feyre subdues Ianthe's mind and forces her into self-harm while creating false memories. However, Brannagh and Dagdan witness this display of power and poison Feyre with crushed faebane in her food, further suppressing her already-drained magic. When they attempt to capture and enslave Lucien, Feyre fights back with her remaining strength. Lucien beheads Brannagh, and Feyre kills Dagdan by driving a knife through his eye into his skull. She then flees the Spring Court with Lucien as her companion, their bond having darkened and seemingly severed from Rhysand.
Feyre and Lucien journey through the Autumn Court territory for five days, crossing treacherous terrain while recovering from faebane poisoning. Eris, Beron's heir and Mor's former betrothed, discovers them in a mountain cave and attacks with his brothers. Though Feyre manages to unleash fire and bring down the cave to seal their pursuers inside, the group is forced to flee across the frozen Winter Court lakes. Eris pursues them relentlessly, using his fire magic to melt the ice beneath their feet. Just as Eris overwhelms Feyre with brutal force, Cassian and Azriel arrive—their Illyrian wings fully healed. Cassian defeats Eris in combat, and Feyre reveals herself as High Lady of the Night Court before the brothers winnow them to safety.
Upon arriving at the Night Court's hidden city of Velaris, Feyre reunites with Rhysand and learns the extent of Hybern's preparations: a two-hundred-thousand-strong army comprising forces from Hybern, Vallahan, Montesere, and Rask plans to breach the wall. Rhysand also reveals that Tamlin's court has fractured, with his sentries abandoning him after spreading word that he allowed Hybern to terrorize Feyre. Feyre discovers that her sisters Nesta and Elain have been transformed into High Fae by Hybern's use of the Cauldron and are suffering greatly—Elain is catatonic and weeping, while Nesta is icy and withdrawn. When Feyre attempts to recruit her sisters to help repair the wall using their connection to the Cauldron, Nesta refuses to publicly testify about her transformation.
Rhysand begins securing military alliances, and Feyre participates in diplomatic missions to the Court of Nightmares, where she uses her newfound power to assert authority. There she negotiates with Keir, Mor's father, for military support from the Darkbringer legion. The price is access to Velaris for Keir's court, a devastating concession. Additionally, Rhysand arranges an alliance with Eris, who agrees to support the war effort in exchange for Azriel's help in his bid to overthrow his father Beron. Most significantly, Rhysand and Feyre visit the Prison to negotiate with the Bone Carver, an ancient death-god imprisoned beneath the mountain. The Carver demands the Ouroboros—a legendary mirror that reveals one's true self—in exchange for his aid.
The war begins when Hybern attacks Tarquin's Summer Court at Adriata, and Feyre fights on the front lines for the first time. During the naval battle, Rhysand confronts an illusion of the King of Hybern, discovering that the king is tampering with Rhysand's magic, preventing him from using his full power. Meanwhile, Feyre learns from Elain—revealed to be a Seer—that a sixth human queen, Vassa, has been cursed and enslaved. Despite the chaos of war, Lucien volunteers to find Vassa, and Rhysand winnows him to the continent to begin the search.
Hybern then breaches Velaris itself by sending assassins through the wards. In the library beneath the House of Wind, Hybern's Ravens attack Feyre and Nesta, prompting Feyre to strike a bargain with an ancient, non-corporeal creature dwelling in the library's depths—the creature Bryaxis, who inhabits the darkness. In exchange for protection, Bryaxis agrees to tell the creature stories of life and provide "company." When Hybern's forces breach the wall completely using the Cauldron's power as a weapon, the stakes escalate dramatically.
