AFTERWORD

Chapter 70

Chapter 69

Overview

On the morning of the final battle against Hybern, Feysand's army reaches the vast plain where the king has positioned his forces. Before the armies clash, Rhysand delivers an intimate speech to his inner circle about fate and gratitude, and Feyre reveals a shocking secret: she has bound both the Bone Carver and Bryaxis to her will through bargains inked on her spine, and Rhysand has independently secured the Weaver as an ally. The three ancient beings are unleashed upon Hybern's army as the shields fall.

Summary

The chapter opens as Feyre's army marches through the mortal lands, witnessing the destruction Hybern has wrought, including the devastation of Feyre's family estate and village. The troops—comprising Illyrians, Darkbringers, and forces from multiple courts—struggle to maintain discipline as Cassian enforces strict order. During a midday break, Feyre and Nesta don Illyrian leathers while Elain is provided a more modest Winter Court outfit by Viviane. Azriel offers Elain his legendary blade Truth-Teller, an unprecedented gesture that surprises everyone. Rhysand gathers his inner circle—Cassian, Azriel, Mor, Amren, Feyre, and her sisters—in the meadow and delivers an emotional speech about fate, gratitude, and the family they've become, concluding with a moment of physical unity as they link hands. They proceed to the battlefield, a vast grassy plain by the sea where Hybern has positioned his army with strategic high-ground advantage. Cassian reports they are vastly outnumbered and estimates only a few hours of resistance if shields fail. Azriel reveals his shadows are searching for the Cauldron while Feyre prepares to cross the battlefield on foot to find and stop it. As the two armies face off, magical shields are exchanged and begin to falter. In a dramatic moment before Hybern's shield completely falls, Feyre reveals she has inked bargains onto her spine binding both the Bone Carver (now in an Illyrian form) and Bryaxis to her will. Rhysand then reveals his own ace: he has secured the Weaver as an ally through a bargain offered by Helion, with the promise of breaking her containment spell. As the shields collapse and both sides unleash their power, these three ancient, terrifying beings emerge to assault Hybern's forces.
