Chapter 20
Chapter 19
Overview
Feyre trains with Cassian at the House of Wind, where he reveals his anger that she and Rhysand hid her High Lady status before the Hybern mission. The conversation touches on Rhysand's pattern of shouldering burdens alone, mirroring his sacrifice during Amarantha's reign. Azriel arrives to teach Feyre to fly, whisking her away to a mountain lake where she begins summoning and controlling her new wings.
Summary
Feyre arrives at the sparring ring atop the House of Wind for training with Cassian after spending the morning with Rhysand. During their session, Cassian reveals his frustration that Feyre and Rhysand concealed her High Lady status before the Hybern battle, arguing it would have changed everything—making her "theirs" to protect rather than just Rhysand's mate. Feyre defends the secrecy, noting she did what was necessary. Cassian explains his worry stems partly from Rhysand's dangerous tendency to take on all burdens himself, drawing a parallel to fifty years prior when Rhysand trapped himself at Amarantha's party to protect the Night Court. When Nesta arrives and begins flirting with Cassian, Feyre mentally calls to Rhysand for rescue. Instead of Rhysand, Azriel arrives and whisks Feyre away to a mountain lake for flying lessons, leaving Cassian frustrated. At the lake, Azriel guides Feyre through summoning her wings—which she created from memory of Rhysand's—and teaches her the mechanics of controlling them: keeping them off the ground, lifting and folding, and building the necessary muscle groups. Feyre struggles with the weight and complexity of the wings, nearly toppling forward when attempting to fold them quickly, but Azriel catches her and continues the instruction.
