AFTERWORD

Chapter 12

Chapter 11

Overview

Feyre and Lucien escape through a border cave into the Autumn Court, traveling north on foot to avoid detection while faebane blocks Feyre's magic and her bond with Rhys. After five days of tense travel through Beron's territory, they reach the foothills bordering the Winter Court, but Lucien's brothers ambush them in their cave camp.

Summary

Feyre emerges from the cave between courts with Lucien, stripped of her magic by faebane and unable to sense danger. Lucien leads them into the Autumn Court forest, heading north while Feyre worries about Rhys discovering their bond has gone dark. That night, Lucien brings her to an abandoned hunting cave where he kept supplies. Feyre admits she planned the entire escape; Lucien reveals he knew she was lying about her power at Hybern because it matched his friend's Dawn Court magic. He explains he stayed silent out of pity for Rhys and to protect his mate Elain from Feyre's potential retribution. They argue about Feyre's treatment of Tamlin and her motives regarding Lucien himself. Over five days, they travel north through Beron's vast territory, the Forest House, and past farmlands, moving cautiously to avoid sentries. Lucien mentions Jesminda, a woman from the farmlands he failed to protect, explaining why the local people would betray him. They push into the foothills toward the Winter Court border, hoping Feyre's magic will return enough to contact Rhys or winnow home. That night, exhausted, Feyre finally sleeps deeply. She experiences a strange dream-like connection to Lucien's mind as he keeps watch, seeing herself through his eyes—young and vulnerable. She senses him adding his cloak to her blankets before the dream fades. She wakes to a vice grip on her face and finds Lucien's brothers have discovered them in the cave.
