Chapter 76
Chapter 75
Overview
Elain and Nesta kill the King of Hybern using the Cauldron and Truth-Teller. Amren reveals she has been bound and asks Feyre to use the Cauldron to unbind her true form, which will allow her to destroy Hybern's army. Feyre performs the unbinding ritual, and Amren's ancient, powerful celestial form is released, devastating the remaining enemy forces before she fades away.
Summary
The chapter opens with the King of Hybern dying from a knife wound. Nesta retrieves the blade and viciously twists it through his neck, severing his head. Elain rushes to Cassian while Nesta stares at the king's severed head, then drops it. The Cauldron reacts to what Elain has done by defending her, but when Elain's father's body appears in an adjacent clearing, she screams and the Cauldron hurls Feyre across the battlefield. Feyre witnesses the battle from the Cauldron's perspective: Rhys and other High Lords in their beast forms slaughtering enemies, Helion battling the Hybern commander, Bryaxis protecting mortal soldiers, Drakon and Miryam fighting Jurian, and Mor joining the fray. Hybern's army remains overwhelming despite their king's death. Feyre is pulled back into her body by Amren, who reveals she lied about the Book's contents—it contained an unbinding spell for her, not a control spell. Amren explains she has been bound since ancient times and asks Feyre to use the Cauldron as a conduit to free her true form, which will annihilate Hybern's forces. Varian appears and begs her not to go through with it, explaining she will lose herself. Amren reflects on watching humans love and build for eons, calling her time in this world a gift, particularly her time with Varian. She performs the unbinding ritual by entering the Cauldron while Feyre channels the spell. The Cauldron shatters as Amren's ancient celestial form—a being of fire and light with burning wings and a crown of incandescent light—erupts forth. She sweeps across Hybern's armies, burning and destroying them with overwhelming power. She kills the Hybern commander, then moves to the sea where the final battle rages, incinerating the last of the enemy forces before her power fades to a single flame and then to light dancing on the waves.
