Chapter 63

After dinner, the group senses the Cauldron's presence and power reaching out to their camp. Feysand realizes the Cauldron is aware of their location, and those Made by it can hear its siren song. The group awakens to find Elain missing from her tent, and they discover only her cloak at the forest's edge—the Cauldron has taken her.

Following dinner, Amren and Varian leave together intimately. Feysand and others discuss the threat of the King of Hybern's army. Feysand falls into troubled sleep, dreaming of the Suriel, the Weaver, Lord Graysen appearing to Elain, and most disturbingly, the Cauldron watching and reaching toward her. Feysand wakes convinced something is wrong and alerts Rhys. Nesta appears, also sensing danger. Amren arrives and confirms she feels the Cauldron's power in the camp. The three Made females—Feysand, Nesta, and Amren—can hear the Cauldron's haunting song, though others cannot. Azriel senses disturbance through shadows and wind. Cassian and Mor appear. The Cauldron withdraws as quickly as it came, and Amren realizes Hybern now knows their location and the Cauldron was scouting them. Azriel asks about Elain. The group rushes to Elain's tent and finds it empty with only warm blankets. Rhys winnows to search. Feysand realizes the Cauldron lured Elain away using an illusion of Graysen, as she had dreamed. At the forest's edge, Rhys finds only Elain's warm blue cloak—the Cauldron has taken her.
