Chapter 68

Overview

Feyre discovers the Ouroboros mirror in a snow-filled chamber beneath the palace and confronts her true self reflected within it—a massive beast of claws, scales, and predatory power. The Bone Carver reveals he tested her worthiness through the mirror's trial; satisfied that she faced herself without breaking, he agrees to honor his bargain and help her in the coming battle.

Summary

Feyre enters a snow-laden chamber carved into rock beneath the moonstone palace, where she finds the Ouroboros—a massive bronze disc mirror fashioned as a serpent devouring its own tail. When she approaches the mirror, a creature materializes behind her: a scaled, furred beast with black and gold paws and blue-gray eyes. Feyre attempts to strike it with her dagger, but the creature vanishes, revealing itself to be her reflection in the mirror—a manifestation of what lies beneath her skin. She retrieves the mirror and brings it to the Bone Carver's cell. The Carver explains that the Ouroboros shows people their true selves, and he required proof of her worthiness before assisting her; most who gaze upon it either fail to recognize themselves or are shattered by what they see, but Feyre faced the horror without breaking. Acknowledging her as rare and worthy, the Carver agrees to uphold his bargain and aid her in the coming battle. Feyre, filled with rage at his test but resolved, takes his hand to begin their alliance.
