AFTERWORD

Chapter 23

Chapter 22

Overview

Feyre and Cassian travel to the Prison to meet with the Bone Carver, an ancient imprisoned entity. Rhys warns them they will be cut off from him while inside. During the journey, Feyre experiences a shocking revelation about her future son when she sees the Carver's true form—a child with Rhysand's eyes and her own mouth.

Summary

Feyre wakes from nightmares and discusses her fears with Rhys before they depart. Rhys, Feyre, and Cassian winnow to the Prison, where Rhys emphasizes the wards will prevent him from reaching them and instructs them to stay in sight of each other. He reminds Cassian who he imprisoned here. During the climb up the misty mountain, Cassian reveals that the Bone Carver was an old god from before the High Fae arrived, capable of felling hundreds of soldiers. He also warns that the creature must be bound to obey them. Feyre learns the Carver cannot be controlled without proper precautions. When they enter his cell, the Bone Carver appears as a young boy, but Feyre realizes with horror that his face is a combination of Rhysand's features and her own—a vision of their future son. The Carver greets her as High Lady and congratulates her on her union. Feyre presents him with a bone shard from the Attor. The Carver then reveals he can smell the Weaver of the Wood on her and begins taunting Cassian about a secret from Hybern, mentioning something that emerged from the island and speaking of "Nesta" repeatedly. Feyre interrupts his torment and explains they have the Book of Breathings with spells that could send beings like the Carver's sister home. The Carver becomes intensely interested.
