Chapter 23
Chapter 21
Overview
Ogun, the god of blacksmithing, appears to punish Paz and Anton for their failures as his worshippers. Despite Carl's attempts to intervene, Anton is killed. Carl then learns a devastating truth from the dying Paz: Sister Ines is a former serial killer from a women's prison who possesses a mind-control ability that makes people compelled to protect her. As Paz accepts his death peacefully, Sister Ines suddenly transforms him into a card using a mysterious flag, shocking everyone present.
Summary
Ogun materializes in the chamber after Paz and Anton's repeated failures as his worshippers. Carl watches helplessly as the god approaches the two dying men. Sister Ines attempts to intervene by attacking the god with her trident, but Ogun freezes her with a Shelved debuff and continues toward his targets. When Carl shouts in protest and casts Black Nimbus on Anton to remove him from Ogun's grace, the god crushes Anton's skull beneath his heel anyway, stating that removing divine protection does not save one from divine wrath. Ogun then departs, leaving Anton dead and Paz mortally wounded with a permanent debuff preventing any healing. As Paz dies, he urgently warns Carl about Sister Ines, revealing that she possesses a racial ability called Toxoplasmosis that compels people to protect and like her while making them forget the compulsion itself. Paz explains that he and Anton became worshippers of Ogun specifically to resist this control, but it failed. He then reveals that Sister Ines was imprisoned for poisoning all the sisters in her convent—she was known as El Segador de La Habana, the Reaper of Havana. Though Paz notes she has been peaceful since entering the dungeon, he felt obligated to warn Carl. When Sister Ines unfreezes and rushes to Paz, Carl briefly considers killing her but ultimately decides they should separate instead. As Paz accepts his peaceful death, Sister Ines suddenly produces a flag and jabs it into his neck, transforming him into a green card. Two new goddesses—Yemaya and Eileithyia—then manifest in the realm.
