AFTERWORD

Chapter 52

Chapter 49

Overview

After recovering from his battle with the porcupine lady and ogre, Carl learns that Donut has collected the tokens and acquired new cards from the defeated enemies, including a magical staff and a unique combo card. However, Carl realizes Donut is anxious about the final confrontation ahead—she recognizes that Carl's father is waiting inside the trailer, identified by the dented motorcycle from the fourth floor that Carl once saw offered as a prize.

Summary

Carl wakes after being knocked unconscious for forty minutes during the previous fight. Donut, covered in gore, debriefs him on the situation: the bodies are in his inventory with the tokens, though the cards were scattered. Donut collected the cards herself and has already made improvements to their deck, acquiring a magical staff card from the ogre that functions as a reusable card (not consumable) and a unique Golden Combo card. She suggests she could fight the final battle alone, but Carl gently probes her strange demeanor and realizes she is anxious about what—or rather, who—lies ahead. Donut reveals she knows Carl's father is inside the trailer: the dented motorcycle parked outside matches the one Carl was offered on the fourth floor, a sight that clearly affected him. Carl acknowledges her perceptiveness and tells her they must face this confrontation, advising her not to try to be like him but to be herself. They prepare to approach the trailer for the final encounter.
