III. The Bedlam

Overview

Carl and Donut face the Reminiscence Hydra, a nine-headed boss monster composed of people from Carl's past, including his brother Asher and stepmother Tami-Lynn. The fight is chaotic and devastating, with the AI deliberately flouting new rules against using recognizable loved ones, while Carl struggles emotionally and physically through the battle.

Summary

Carl and Donut prepare for their fight in the burning trailer park, laying traps and taking invisibility potions. When the boss emerges from the rubble, it's a horrifying creature with nine heads on long stalks belonging to people Carl knows: Asher (his brother), Tami-Lynn (his stepmother), Bea's mother, Judge Lucian (a cat show judge), Dick (his boss), Mr. Roth (his landlord), Monobrow Sam, Sally (a coworker), and Sugar Cube (a cat). The AI explains in a lengthy exposition that it has technically created new versions by altering one molecule, circumventing rules against using recognized loved ones. Judge Lucian, the keymaster head bound by card combat rules, serves as the primary opponent while the other heads act as minions with various attacks. The fight involves multiple summons—Jola the Christmas cat, Geraldo the seal, Shi Maria the spider, and others—being deployed by both sides. Carl discovers each head has different resistances and must use a snap collar and shrink wand to decapitate Bea's mother (the fire-resistant head) and cauterize the wound with moonshine to prevent regeneration. The battle escalates with devastating collateral damage to the surrounding area. Alpha Carl, a totem of Carl himself with exaggerated confidence and a kitten named King Croissant, appears as an additional threat. Carl is severely burned while cauterizing Bea's mother's neck wound. Shi Maria the spider uses her magic eye to identify Asher among the heads and kills him mercifully, communicating telepathically with Carl afterward. Shi Maria is eventually killed by multiple death rays from the Sam heads. Throughout the fight, the hydra heads mock and insult Carl and Donut relentlessly. Near the end, Alpha Carl crushes Carl's chest before being knocked away by Mongo. As the hydra burns to death, Tami-Lynn reveals she deliberately ensured Asher's fate to protect him from suffering like Carl did, then dies along with the remaining Judge Lucian head. The hydra's body disintegrates, and combat ends in victory.
