Chapter 52

After defeating the hydra boss, Carl and Donut wait for the fire to cool and process the aftermath. Carl realizes the hydra contained people from his past—including his father, his ex-girlfriend Beatrice's mother, and his newly-discovered half-brother Asher. Donut reveals troubling details about how Beatrice manipulated others and hid information from Carl. They examine the loot, including the Champion Pack and four new totem cards, and Carl learns Frank and Alpha Carl were automatically added to their deck.

Carl and Donut remain in the burned-out trailer, waiting for the fire to subside before looting. They discuss how Carl identified the bosses based on personal knowledge of their fears: Sam had a death ray (a nickname for his coworker who feared drowning), and Dick the water boss was terrified of water despite working in a boatyard and being a former Navy diver. Carl realizes all the hydra heads were people collected during the initial collapse—his father, coworkers, and acquaintances—all now dead. He receives a new achievement from Emberus increasing his Devotee rank, upgrading his Burn immunity and granting a once-daily Self-Immolation spell, though his tithe increases from 5% to 10%. Donut reveals she recognized everyone in the fight except Carl's stepmother, including Sally, a coworker Beatrice had deliberately gotten fired through a cruel scheme involving fake photos and a fabricated stalking claim. More troublingly, Donut explains that Beatrice was on Carl's Facebook, saw a message from Tami-Lynn (later revealed to be Asher's mother) asking to meet, and blocked her without telling Carl. Carl realizes Beatrice knew about his half-brother Asher and deliberately hid this information from him, likely to prevent him from leaving. The revelation that Beatrice sabotaged his job and concealed his family makes Carl genuinely angry for the first time. They loot the cards: four totem options (Alpha Carl, King Croissant, Bam-Bam the Tummy Acher, and Leveled-Up Frank), plus utility cards and a Champion Pack offering backup totem slots, a trophy, and Flee cards. Carl refuses to take Frank or Alpha Carl out of respect for the dead, and Donut rejects Bam-Bam, but the system automatically adds Frank and Alpha Carl to their deck regardless. Carl messages other crawlers that the card-based bosses are manifestations, not truly the people they represent.
