Chapter 55

Carl arrives at a homeless shelter in the early morning hours of Christmas, drawn by a cryptic message written in Syndicate Standard on the building's exterior. He waits among sleeping men until breakfast time, when he spots an elderly Asian man wearing a red trapper hat who directly addresses him as a crawler, revealing that this encounter has been deliberately arranged.

Carl rides north on a motorcycle through an eerie, empty highway on Christmas morning, troubled by the disappearance of the Open Intellect Pacifist Network members. He stops at a gas station where he encounters a memory ghost of an elderly bloodhound named Lightning Lou, left alone by his owners. Using a map, Carl locates a homeless shelter only a few blocks away. He casts detection spells and finds the area completely empty of threats. Circling the graffiti-covered shelter building, Carl discovers a message written in Syndicate Standard spray paint hidden among crude graffiti: "Look for me at breakfast every morning. I wear the red hat with the flaps. Coffee then speech." He breaks into the locked shelter and finds a large room filled with sleeping men on cots. Carl waits in a corner and falls asleep, receiving messages from his companions—Donut gets drunk, Mordecai and Katia express concern, Louis reports on the situation back at base, and Zev cryptically warns that the AI forbids interference and hints that Carl is about to learn what a Residual is. At 6 AM, Carl spots an elderly Asian man in a bright-red trapper hat helping set up for breakfast. After the man takes his coffee and sits down, he makes direct eye contact with Carl and speaks to him in English, greeting him as "crawler."
