Overview
Wind and Truth is the fifth novel in Brandon Sanderson's epic Stormlight Archive series, representing both the climactic conclusion of the ten-year war between Dalinar's coalition and Odium and the true midpoint of the ten-book arc. Set on the world of Roshar, the novel explores themes of sacrifice, redemption, and the cost of leadership as multiple factions race against a nine-day deadline to resolve their destinies before a mystical contest of champions determines the fate of an entire world. The stakes have grown exponentially: Odium—the Shard of hatred and rage—has been revealed to have a new Vessel in the form of Taravangian, a philosopher-king who has Ascended to godhood after orchestrating events across the series. Unlike his predecessor Rayse, Taravangian is genuinely concerned with ending suffering and bringing order, making him paradoxically more dangerous because his methods appear logical and his goals appear noble. As the novel opens, the kingdom of Alethkar, led by Dalinar Kholin, faces coordinated military offensives on three fronts, with enemy forces racing to capture key cities before Dalinar's contest with Odium begins. Simultaneously, personal quests and political machinations unfold: the Knight Radiant Shallan hunts the Ghostbloods to prevent them from freeing Ba-Ado-Mishram, an ancient Unmade imprisoned for millennia; Kaladin travels to Shinovar to investigate threats to the Herald Szeth; and countless minor characters face their own moral and strategic dilemmas. What emerges is a story about the burden of choice, the impossibility of perfect solutions, and the realization that victory often requires sacrifice so complete it borders on defeat. The novel culminates not in triumph but in a bittersweet resolution where Dalinar Kholin, having bonded with the power of Honor itself, chooses to renounce his oaths to prevent catastrophic divine war, thereby sacrificing his life and his power to ensure that future generations might have a chance at building something better.
Plot Summary
The novel begins with a prologue containing Brandon Sanderson's acknowledgment of the book's scope and his collaborators before transitioning into the main narrative, which unfolds across nine days of intense conflict and personal revelation. The story opens with Gavilar Kholin, Dalinar's deceased brother, in a vision with the Stormfather, desperately seeking immortality through the Words that would make him a Herald. Gavilar meets with Restares and a figure claiming to be Herald Nalan, discussing the location of Ba-Ado-Mishram, an Unmade he has created a weapon to control. That evening, an assassin mortally wounds Gavilar on his balcony; in his final moments, Gavilar gives the Stormfather a sphere of Voidlight and instructs it to ensure Dalinar learns the most important Words. The Stormfather refuses, stating it will not trust Gavilar's family again. The narrative then shifts to Urithiru, where Kaladin wakes feeling unexpectedly good despite weeks of hiding and emotional toll. He experiences a mysterious voice on the wind warning of an approaching terrible storm. In Shadesmar, Shallan discovers her original Cryptic bondmate Testament, whom she damaged by rejecting their bond after killing her mother as a child, and vows to help Testament recover. These opening scenes establish the novel's central tension: multiple factions race to achieve their goals before the Contest of Champions forces a confrontation between Dalinar and Odium. Kaladin is sent on a mission to Shinovar with Szeth to investigate Herald Ishar and prevent him from killing spren. Shallan, meanwhile, departs for Lasting Integrity with Adolin and Maya, intending to locate the prison of Ba-Ado-Mishram and prevent the Ghostbloods from freeing her. The journey to Azimir becomes perilous when they are attacked by Heavenly Ones while crossing Shadesmar; during the battle, Shallan achieves her Fourth Ideal by summoning real Shardplate armor made from creationspren. Upon returning to the Physical Realm, they discover corrupted spren at the Oathgate who allow the approaching singer army through in exchange for their promised liberation. Shallan and Adolin transfer through the Oathgate to Urithiru, where they find the tower now alive with greenish Stormlight and activity. In Shadesmar, Kalak is captured by Felt, a spy for the Ghostbloods, who reveals that the seon Ala—supposedly under Shallan's care—has been transmitting information about Mishram's location to Mraize and Iyatil. Meanwhile, Odium appears in a vision to Taravangian, but reveals himself to actually be a manifestation of Taravangian's own divided consciousness, suggesting the philosopher-king now holds the Shard. Wit discovers he has lost critical memory of a conversation with Odium, indicating the new Vessel is far more dangerous and capable of exploiting loopholes than the previous one. The military situation escalates dramatically with coordinated assaults on three critical locations: Azimir, Thaylen City, and the Shattered Plains. Shallan's team infiltrates a Ghostblood safehouse in Narak, where she discovers the organization is designing hand ballistas to deliver anti-Stormlight as payload—weapons specifically designed to kill Radiants and their spren. When her cover is compromised, Shallan summons her Shardplate armor and escapes with Windrunner reinforcements, though the Ghostbloods successfully flee to Shadesmar. Simultaneously, Dalinar and Navani prepare to enter the Spiritual Realm to understand how past Radiants defeated Odium, using Wit as their guide. They open a perpendicularity in a cistern chamber, but Mraize, having infiltrated their group, destroys the perpendicularity with an anti-Light dagger at the moment they cross, severing their connection to the Physical Realm and trapping them in the Spiritual Realm. Gavinor, Dalinar's grandson, is accidentally pulled into the vision. The battle for Azimir becomes a grueling test of human resolve. Adolin commands the defense of the dome, employing pike formations and archer support to hold against waves of singer attacks. When a Heavenly One he previously fought returns scarred from their encounter, Adolin recognizes it but refuses to waste time in single combat, instead coordinating a disciplined retreat. After four days of continuous fighting with devastating casualties and no reinforcements arriving due to betrayals by Emul and Tashikk, Adolin discovers his right leg is crushed beyond saving and must be amputated. Despite this devastating injury, he returns to the front lines, and miraculously, Taln—a Herald who has been captured and tortured for centuries—awakens and fights, killing dozens of Fused and Abidi personally before falling. The Singer assault collapses, buying Azimir another day at terrible cost. In the Shattered Plains, Sigzil coordinates a defensive strategy across multiple plateaus, deliberately creating weaker points to deceive the enemy into attacking non-vital positions. However, when Moash appears with a device that nullifies Stormlight, Sigzil is forced to renounce his Radiant oaths to protect his spren Vienta, becoming powerless. The humans successfully evacuate Narak while maintaining the illusion of defeat, and Venli executes a diplomatic plan with the listeners and chasmfiends, negotiating a peace treaty that cedes the Shattered Plains to the singers in exchange for an end to hostilities. At Thaylen City, Jasnah prepares an extensive defense but discovers the approaching invasion fleet carries only stones, not soldiers—it's a feint designed to distract from Odium's concentration of forces elsewhere. She argues for redeploying Thaylen troops to aid the Shattered Plains, but Queen Fen's fear of deception paralyzes her decision-making until Odium himself appears and initiates a debate with Jasnah about whether Thaylen should join his empire. Taravangian uses Jasnah's own philosophy against her, revealing a contract she signed ordering Aesudan's assassination and demonstrating her moral compromise. Under this psychological assault, Jasnah breaks, and Fen ultimately agrees to Odium's terms, bringing Thaylenah into his vassalage without military force. In Shinovar, Kaladin and Szeth journey toward the monasteries where Herald Honorbearers guard Honorblades. Szeth discovers that the Voice speaking to him since childhood is actually Ishar, a Herald who has taken a fraction of Odium's power and connected himself to all the people of Shinovar. As Szeth confronts the Honorbearers in combat, Kaladin attempts to convince Ishar to accept help, arguing that true godhood requires free choice rather than forced obedience. Despite Kaladin's persuasion, Ishar demands Szeth's obedience, forcing him to fight six Honorbearers—including his own father—who beat him nearly to death. In a moment of clarity, Szeth rejects the cycle of servitude and declares
