Meanwhile, Szeth is brutally beaten by puppet-controlled versions of his father and others under Ishu's control, but breaks free from the Herald's domination by reclaiming his agency and declaring himself the law.

Adolin duels Abidi, a Fused in Shardplate, knowing he must outthink rather than outpower his opponent. Exhausted and missing a leg, Adolin targets a section of Abidi's Plate with three precise sword strikes, then attempts to pierce the eye slit in the helm. The strike pierces one eye, but Abidi heals and seizes Adolin, breaking his sword and lifting him helplessly. As Abidi prepares to kill him, Adolin experiences a moment of clarity about his identity, realizing he need not be the greatest swordsman and that he should lead rather than fight alone. In a parallel scene, Szeth is brutally beaten by six puppets controlled by the Herald Ishu, including one wearing his father's face. Ishu demands obedience while his connection to the land drives spren away and hollows Shinovar.
