Chapter 33
Chapter 36
Overview
This chapter interleaves two scenes: Shallan recovers from a wound sustained during a Ghostblood raid and witnesses their escape to Shadesmar via an Elsecaller or Willshaper, while Lift spends time with young Prince Gavinor outside a war council and then sneaks after Dalinar and the others when they depart on an urgent mission.
Summary
Shallan lies wounded on the floor of the Ghostblood hideout after being struck by an anti-Light bolt. Darcira and other Lightweavers arrive to support her. Shallan deduces that Mraize and the other Ghostbloods escaped to Shadesmar using corrupted Radiant powers—likely an Elsecaller or Willshaper—contradicting her earlier assumption about their abilities. She removes the anti-Light projectile and uses Stormlight to heal, noting that her elevated oath makes her more efficient with the power. Jayn returns with Pattern and the captured trophies from the trophy room. Shallan peers into Shadesmar and glimpses Mraize, Iyatil, and Lieke on a boat heading to Urithiru; she realizes they have set something in motion with Dalinar involving the Unmade Ba-Ado-Mishram. She considers following but decides against facing them alone and plans to seek help. In the second scene, Lift sits outside a war council with young Prince Gavinor, eating meat and frustrated at being excluded. She observes Sigzil and Drehy passing by, banters with Wyndle about her romantic interests, and listens to Gav open up about his traumatic past—his mother gave him to the Voidbringers, his father died rescuing him, and he vows revenge. Lift offers him friendship and a secret handshake. When Dalinar, Navani, and Wit exit the council looking determined, Dalinar must leave before playing swords with Gav, disappointing the boy. Lift gives Wyndle a secret handshake in a moment of genuine affection, then sneaks after the group as they head to the lifts.
