Chapter 51
Chapter 55
Overview
Dalinar awakens in a vision of the deep past, initially trapped in warm chaos before using a stone from Wit as an anchor to reach ancient Shinovar. He discovers he has lost a day and cannot return home through normal means. Navani joins him in the vision, and together they encounter a group of singers debating the nature of their gods, while a mysterious entity called the Wind reveals that humans are about to arrive on Roshar.
Summary
Dalinar struggles through a disorienting vision where he experiences multiple versions of himself from different periods—childhood, his wedding, recent losses—before fighting through the warmth to use Wit's stone as an anchor. He emerges in a mountainous region with a group of singers, discovering he has lost an entire day despite only feeling an hour has passed. His clock, tied to Wit's, becomes his only connection to the Physical Realm, though attempts to use it as a gateway home fail. The landscape reveals itself as Shinovar, identifiable by the vast mudflat plain below. After chasing off chull rustlers, Dalinar rests and uses Stormlight to heal his fatigue. When Navani arrives in the vision through a silver cord bond, she reports sensing additional presences. Together they question the singers about Honor and gods, learning of a theological split between those who worship Honor and those who await the return of Adonalsium (the Origin of Songs). A gentle highstorm passes through, and the singers pray. Afterward, an invisible entity called the Wind—ancient and weakening from the arrival of new gods—manifests around them, revealing that Szeth and Kaladin have already reached this time period in Shinovar. The Wind warns that Honor's power cannot be persuaded but only observed, then directs them to watch as a portal opens in the sky, revealing a world on fire—indicating the imminent arrival of humans on Roshar.
