Chapter 247

In this postlude chapter, Kalak awakens on a peaceful beach that he recognizes as Alaswha and encounters Kaladin, who has joined the Heralds to replace the fallen Jezrien. Kaladin explains that Ishar has restructured the Oathpact to bring the Heralds' minds to a safe place where time passes differently, allowing them healing and rest before returning to Roshar to fight again. After learning that Taln has forgiven them all, Kalak accepts Kaladin's offered hand and commits to one final attempt to save their world.

Kalak wakes on a grassy hillside overlooking an ocean beach near what he believes to be the destroyed city of Alaswha. Disoriented and traumatized, he initially assumes he has died and entered a new form of torture. He sees a group of figures—the other Heralds—and among them notices three who don't belong: a soldier in Kholin blue, an indistinct figure he suspects is Nale's spren, and a woman with white-blue hair. A man named Kaladin approaches him and identifies himself as having joined the Heralds to replace Jezrien, referencing a moment when Kalak agreed to help refound the Oathpact. Kalak struggles to believe this is real, consumed by guilt and shame over his countless failures. Kaladin explains that Ishar has restructured the Oathpact so that the Heralds' minds now exist in this peaceful realm, protected from their enemies, where time moves slowly—months here while years pass on Roshar—giving them unprecedented opportunity for healing before they return to fight. Kalak resists, convinced he deserves nothing and that all is lost. Kaladin persists, offering him the chance to reclaim what he once was and to return to Roshar refreshed rather than broken. When Kalak spots Taln sitting among the others and learns that Taln has forgiven them all, he is moved by unexpected warmth alongside his familiar shame. He reaches out and takes Kaladin's hand, accepting one final attempt to save their world. The chapter concludes by noting this marks the end of the first arc of The Stormlight Archive, with the story to continue in books six through ten.
