Chapter 115

Chapter 130

Overview

Shallan confronts her mother Chana (revealed to be a Herald) in a vision during her wedding ceremony, achieving emotional reconciliation and forgiveness before Chana is drawn away by other souls. Meanwhile, Dalinar endures a harrowing vision where Odium—revealed to be Taravangian—torments him with memories of the Rift and his past atrocities, but Dalinar ultimately transcends the torture by embracing his pain as a guide, leading him to the imprisoned Stormfather and a moment of mutual understanding.

Summary

Shallan escapes her wedding to confront her mother Chana, who has appeared at Urithiru. Chana, though identified as a Herald, is broken and wracked with guilt over the harm she caused Shallan. Despite her anguish, Shallan manages to forgive her mother, recognizing that Chana is trapped in her own suffering. Chana reveals she died months ago on Braize and was drawn to Shallan's wedding by a spiritual pull; she intends to search for Taln among the dead Fused. Before departing as colorful smoke, she hugs Shallan and warns her to trust no Herald except Taln. Testament warns that Odium is present, and the vision collapses. Dalinar, meanwhile, finds himself in a stone prison chamber with Gavinor, Evi, and an unknown man. Odium attacks him with visions of his greatest failures and shame—particularly the burning of the Rift and Evi's death. Instead of breaking, Dalinar rejects the false Blackthorn version of himself and orders a rescue operation to save the Rifters' lives, even striking down Sadeas. When Odium claims this violates his oath to the king, Dalinar stands firm. The Stormfather's voice briefly guides him with wisdom from Nohadon: one cannot choose one's destination, only one's path. Odium then reveals itself as Taravangian, shocking Dalinar—Taravangian now holds the power of Odium. Dalinar discovers a line of golden light in his chest connecting him to something, and he uses the pain itself as an anchor to pull himself through the chaos toward a new vision. He finds the Stormfather imprisoned and broken in a monastery cell, and instead of confronting with violence, Dalinar kneels beside him and offers to help carry his pain. The Stormfather begins to reveal the life of Honor, and a new vision commences.
