Chapter 34

Chapter 37

Overview

Renarin receives a visit from Drehy, who offers support regarding Renarin's feelings for Rlain. Shortly after, Renarin and Rlain enter a shared vision together for the first time, viewing stained glass windows depicting possible futures. The vision turns nightmarish when they witness a disturbing image of a female singer's face consumed by the Rhythm of Agony, before Shallan arrives with urgent news about Ba-Ado-Mishram and a threat involving Dalinar.

Summary

Renarin stands in the agricultural fields outside Urithiru, observing the rapid growth of crops enabled by the Sibling's awakening. Drehy arrives with a report from Navani about potential succession, then lingers to offer Renarin reassurance about his attraction to Rlain, encouraging him to be honest about his feelings while respecting that Rlain may not reciprocate. Drehy emphasizes that Renarin has overcome greater challenges and should live authentically. After Drehy departs, the world darkens and Renarin enters one of his visions. Rlain, bonded to the spren Tumi, realizes he can perceive the vision and enters it alongside Renarin for the first time. Inside the vision's black landscape, they encounter stained glass windows depicting various possible futures: Renarin on a throne in singer clothing, Dalinar on a cliff watching a city crumble, a peaceful green field with diverse peoples, and others. The windows grow increasingly vague. At the far end, a final window shows only a female singer's face with black and red patterns. The image becomes violent and distorted, the singer's face multiplying and contorting as the Rhythm of Agony fills the space, windows shattering to reveal burning cities and broken bodies. The singer's voice echoes promises of destruction. Renarin pulls Rlain out of the vision and they collapse on the real fields. Rlain identifies the rhythm as one associated with Regals or Fused. Shallan then appears and announces that Dalinar and others are searching for the prison of Ba-Ado-Mishram, an ancient and dangerous spren, implying Rlain may have just witnessed her in the vision.
