Chapter 13

Kaladin prepares for a journey to Shinovar with Szeth, gathering supplies and checking on his troops one final time before departure. Meanwhile, Shallan and Adolin's flying group is ambushed by Heavenly Ones over an ocean, forcing Shallan to make a desperate choice to dive after Adolin when he is knocked into the beads below.

Kaladin meets with Szeth in the antechamber to plan their trip to Shinovar, which will involve flying with the highstorm after it passes Azimir that night. Szeth's sentient Shardblade interjects with questions about snacks, referencing instructions from Lift. They arrange to meet at the Oathgate in two hours. Kaladin then travels to the Windrunner barracks quartermaster's office, where Leyten provides him with a fully packed rucksack containing supplies, rations, and personal effects including Wit's flute and Tien's toy horse. Kaladin discovers an unusual rock in the pack that Leyten claims he did not place there. While leaving, Kaladin notices a new honorspren named Lusintia following Dabbid, which surprises both him and Syl. Leyten mentions the spren arrived yesterday, possibly connected to Prince Adolin's trip. Kaladin feels an inexplicable sense of warning—described as a phantom Wind—and decides to check on his remaining troops before departure, sensing that a storm is coming. In a separate scene, Shallan's flying group is attacked by eight Heavenly Ones while traveling over an ocean. During the chaotic battle, one of Drehy's squires is fatally wounded by a Heavenly One's lance. Adolin fights back by throwing weapons from his sword box, while Shallan creates illusions to distract their attackers. When a Heavenly One knocks Adolin from his saddle into the beads below, Shallan makes the critical decision to release her own Lashing and drop after him to prevent his suffocation.
