Chapter 161
Chapter 239
Overview
Szeth-son-Neturo fights six Honorbearers while Kaladin watches with new awareness of the wind spren around him. Simultaneously, Dalinar receives the power of Honor as Renarin and Rlain release Ba-Ado-Mishram from imprisonment. Szeth systematically defeats his opponents, including his first teacher Pozen and his friend Moss, while battling illusions of the people he has killed and confronting his sister Elid before granting her peace.
Summary
Kaladin observes Szeth fighting six Honorbearers with extraordinary skill, moving with the wind itself. Kaladin notices thousands of windspren surrounding him and feels the ancient Wind of Roshar watching this moment. He senses something terrible occurring at Urithiru to the east.
At Urithiru, Dalinar feels the moment Renarin and Rlain release Ba-Ado-Mishram, righting an ancient wrong that had broken Tanavast. Recognizing true honor in those around him—in Renarin and Rlain's actions, in those defending the city, in those seeking truth—Dalinar receives the power of Honor, which had been ostracized for centuries. Honor is reborn in Dalinar Kholin.
With this change, Szeth becomes free from his eternal prison. He continues fighting the Honorbearers with renewed purpose, killing Pozen (his first teacher) and then Moss (the only one he considers a true friend), granting them peace with Nightblood.
Meanwhile, Rlain and Renarin release Mishram in a chamber filled with black smoke. When she appears as a vengeful shadow, Rlain shields Renarin and argues that humans, like spren, contain both good and evil. Mishram screams and explodes with light, ejecting Rlain and Renarin through the floor to land in Shadesmar near the Oathgate plateau where they began.
Szeth faces his three remaining opponents: his sister Elid, a Dustbringer, and a Truthwatcher woman. The Truthwatcher summons shadows—transparent figures of all the people Szeth has killed, their whispers accusing him. Nightblood hungers for more power, its darkness creeping up Szeth's wrist as it seeks his soul. Elid emerges from the shadows, blaming Szeth for destroying their family, and attacks. Szeth recognizes that Elid is no longer truly alive but something else, corrupted by Ishu. When she lunges, Szeth kisses her forehead and sweeps Nightblood through her, granting her peace and sending her Blade clattering to the ground.
