Chapter 156
Chapter 234
Overview
Dalinar faces Gavinor in the contest for the fate of the world atop Urithiru, while Taravangian (now fully merged with Odium) manipulates the conditions by freezing Gavinor mid-fight. Simultaneously, Adolin and his team of ten Shardbearers successfully defend Azir against the invasion, with unexpected aid from Notum. The chapter culminates with Taravangian presenting Dalinar with an impossible choice: forfeit and die, or kill his own grandson.
Summary
The contest begins with Gavinor attacking Dalinar with exceptional skill honed over twenty years of training. Dalinar dodges defensively, unwilling to engage. Taravangian appears and offers Dalinar a Shardblade, claiming no trick is involved. Dalinar reluctantly accepts it to defend himself as the fight intensifies. Gavinor presses his advantage, noting he has lived through many versions of Dalinar in his home realm and has decided of his own will to fight. Taravangian then freezes Gavinor in place using power granted by the lad's oath to him, presenting Dalinar with the core dilemma: fight without knowing who his opponent truly is, or refuse to participate. When Dalinar discards the offered Blade, Taravangian lays out increasingly cruel options—all designed to force Dalinar into moral compromise. He argues that all leaders sacrifice innocents for stability, questioning whether Dalinar is merely pretending at virtue. Dalinar refuses to concede that Taravangian is right, declaring that some prices are too high to pay for victory. Taravangian then reveals he has fully merged with Odium and presents the final ultimatum: forfeit and die, or kill Gavinor. Either way, he claims, he wins—Dalinar will either perish and be resurrected as his general, or compromise his principles. In the parallel sequence, Adolin commands ten Shardbearers in Plate, including the newly arrived Notum (barely substantial in this realm but capable of controlling Shardblade and armor). They devastate the enemy lines so thoroughly that ordinary soldiers withdraw. When Noura announces the contest has begun, the Fused and their forces immediately stand down, bound by Odium's own rules. Adolin negotiates their withdrawal to the Oathgate and Shadesmar, securing a bloodless end to the battle for Azir.
