Chapter 80
Interlude 13
Overview
Interlude 13 focuses on Taravangian's internal struggle as he attempts to fully merge his godly nature with his mortal identity. Standing atop a mountain in Shinovar, he confronts Cultivation and ultimately decides to embrace his desire for conquest, becoming fully aligned as Odium with a unified purpose.
Summary
Taravangian reflects on his plans to dominate Shinovar while considering his broader ambitions across Roshar and beyond. Cultivation appears and challenges him to examine whether both halves of his being—mind and heart—truly support his path to conquest. Through their exchange, Taravangian realizes that his two divine aspects have been working at cross-purposes: while both desire dominion, they do so for different reasons, preventing true unity. He confronts a moment of genuine doubt when considering two people he deeply respects—Jasnah and Dalinar Kholin—and whether their opposition might warrant reconsideration. However, this doubt leads him to a deeper self-awareness: his drive for conquest is not a logical or emotional necessity, but a pure desire born from years of making difficult sacrifices as a king. He wants to finally enjoy the rewards and achievements available to him, unrestricted. Accepting this truth with full clarity, his two halves—mind and heart—achieve perfect alignment. Taravangian fully becomes Odium, manifesting an avatar in golden vestments with shining eyes. Cultivation, witnessing this complete unification, expresses profound disappointment and departs. Odium, now fully realized and unified, declares his intention to provide lessons to those he respects who oppose him.
