Navani finds herself in a vision of Urithiru centuries in the past, appearing as a dead Bondsmith to those around her. She discovers she can perceive faint teal lines of Connection and uses one to contact the Sibling, who is weak but still present in the tower. The Sibling reveals that during these final days before sleep, the Radiant orders fell into conflict. Melishi, the Bondsmith at that time, discovered how to imprison spren using fabrials and withdrew from the Sibling, sensing that great pain was coming—the Recreance. The Sibling cryptically warns Navani about a Windrunner from Rira with heliodor-colored hair, saying he lies and is central to what happens. Navani reconnects with Dalinar and Gavinor, explaining what she learned. They discuss how the news of humanity's alien origins, revealed by the Skybreakers, may have triggered the Recreance, though the Stormfather is hiding additional truths. Dalinar and Navani experiment with controlling the vision itself, discovering they can manipulate how they're perceived by strengthening Connections. Using Navani's scientific method of repetition and control, they successfully shift perspectives and locate themselves among Radiants on a battlefield, finding the older Windrunner entering a tent—their target for understanding what led to the Recreance. Meanwhile, in the present conflict in Azimir, Adolin fights a massive thunderclast using an oil-based trap and chain strategy. Despite his efforts and those of his honor guard, the creature proves devastatingly powerful, killing his companion Neziham by crushing him, destroying the chain, and continuing toward a domed structure. Adolin lies defeated and exhausted as the thunderclast advances unchecked.
