Szeth and Kaladin arrive at a monastery in Shinovar where they discover a townsperson still under the influence of an Unmade's corruption. Szeth finds a cherished childhood toy he'd hidden there years ago, triggering an emotional breakthrough. Kaladin helps Szeth confront his past trauma and self-loathing, leading to a moment of vulnerability and hope. The chapter ends with the arrival of Nalan'Elin, a Herald, who appears to have been summoned by Szeth's highspren.
Summary
Szeth and Kaladin travel to a riverside city in Shinovar, finding it largely empty due to an Unmade's influence. They discover a woman still present, sweeping a house, who reveals that most townspeople were sent to the first monastery—identified as Ashertmarn. Szeth directs her to flee southward and continues toward the monastery at the city's center. Inside, Szeth is drawn to his old acolyte quarters, where he finds a small woolen toy lamb he'd hidden under a loose brick—a treasured possession from his childhood before he was taken as an acolyte. The discovery overwhelms him emotionally. Kaladin, witnessing Szeth's tears, realizes that Szeth's tragic nature mirrors that of Tien rather than Kaladin himself: a child torn from home and forced into violence. Kaladin initiates a conversation about choice, responsibility, and self-worth, arguing that while Szeth bears responsibility for his actions, he also deserves happiness and the chance to determine his own future. After significant resistance, Szeth finally accepts Kaladin's outstretched hand and admits his desire to stop killing and cease causing pain, though he despairs that his nature as a weapon makes this impossible. Syl demonstrates her growing strength by retrieving the toy lamb from its hiding place. As they exit the monastery, Nalan'Elin, Herald of Justice, appears waiting in the courtyard with two highspren, having apparently been summoned by Szeth's spren seeking reinforcement.
