Chapter 126
Epilogue: Majestic Improvisation
Overview
This epilogue follows two major plot threads: Szeth's confrontation with Herald Nin-son-God at a ruined monastery, and Jasnah's diplomatic debate with Taravangian, who has become the new Odium after Rayse's defeat. Both scenes represent critical moments of choice and agency for their protagonists.
Summary
Szeth and Kaladin travel to the Skybreaker monastery in the highlands, where Szeth grapples with his newfound ability to make choices rather than simply obey orders. During their journey, Kaladin shares his own struggle with violence and killing, revealing how he learned to take responsibility as a leader rather than blindly following commands. This conversation fundamentally shifts Szeth's perspective—he realizes that healing and choosing his own path is possible.
Upon reaching the monastery, they discover it has been attacked and abandoned, with people hiding in the shadows. Nin-son-God awaits them inside, initially offering Szeth a simple test: to swear an oath of obedience. Szeth refuses, demanding to know what he will be asked to do and what the cost will be. When Nin insists on blind obedience, Szeth declares he is not a thing to be commanded but a person deserving of choice. Nin attacks, but Kaladin intervenes, offering himself as Szeth's champion. The two agree to fight without Stormlight—sword against spear, skill against skill, with Kaladin accepting the potentially fatal challenge to protect Szeth's right to choose.
Meanwhile, Jasnah meets Queen Fen at a temple to face Odium in a promised debate about whether Thaylenah should join his empire. Jasnah initially spent hours preparing arguments, but realizes the Thaylens will naturally reject such dominance. When Odium arrives, he reveals himself as Taravangian—the philosopher-king who has Ascended to godhood after Rayse's defeat. Taravangian promises no tricks or attacks during their conversation, binding himself by deific power. As they sit to begin the debate, Taravangian makes a cryptic statement: that Jasnah herself will be the reason Fen joins his empire, and he thanks her for her service.
