Chapter 57

Kaladin, Syl, and Szeth approach a walled monastery city in Shinovar, where they discover the population has been sheltering together for two years. After learning the surrounding towns have turned violent and hostile, they infiltrate the Willshaper monastery and find the corpse of Sivi, an Honorbearer who refused to bow to the Unmade and died rather than submit. Szeth reveals himself to the people as a Knight Radiant and vows to cleanse each monastery of corruption.

The three approach a fortified monastery city called Koring, noting the unusual wall built after Szeth's previous departure. As they walk, Kaladin attempts to counsel Szeth on managing his emotions and dark thoughts, comparing the struggle to military training—developing "warrior thoughts" to counter destructive impulses. Szeth's highspren listens but warns against Kaladin's teachings. Upon reaching the gates, they discover the city harbors thousands of refugees from surrounding towns, which have become violent and dark. The people are trapped, unable to flee east. Szeth and Kaladin fly to the Willshaper monastery, where they discover it boarded shut. Using his Dustbringing powers, Szeth creates an opening in the roof and drops into the great hall. There they find Sivi's desiccated corpse clutching a Willshaper Honorblade, with words carved in stone declaring "I will not bow to him." Unlike the previous monastery where the people were cursed, these people remain uncursed—suggesting Sivi's refusal to serve the Unmade broke the cycle. Szeth destroys the monastery gates and reveals his identity to the gathered people, proclaiming he is now a Knight Radiant who will cleanse each monastery of corruption. He and Kaladin plan to gather Stormlight and visit the remaining monasteries. Kaladin offers to split their efforts. Szeth reflects that his purpose—cleansing Shinovar and then ending his own life to achieve justice—is finally within reach, and he credits Kaladin for helping him find agency in his choices.
