AFTERWORD

Chapter 155

Chapter 232

Overview

Adolin receives unexpected aid from deadeye spren that Maya has gathered, allowing him to arm his soldiers with conjured Shardblades and Plate to face overwhelming Fused forces. Simultaneously, Szeth speaks the Fifth Ideal of the Skybreakers, gains clarity of mind and choice, then releases his spren bond; Ishar responds by forcing all nearby individuals—including Kaladin, Syl, and other Honorbearers—to experience the accumulated despair and madness he claims to bear on behalf of the Heralds.

Summary

Adolin faces twelve Fused and near-certain defeat in the Azimir palace hallway, with only minutes until a deadline. When he despairs that his few defenders will be slaughtered, Maya reveals she has gathered not honorspren but deadeye spren—forgotten Blades and Plate scattered across Shadesmar—approximately fifty of them. Through Maya's eyes, Adolin sees these wounded warriors salute him and commit to fighting alongside him. Recognizing the distinction between an oath (breakable) and a promise (enduring through effort), Adolin accepts their aid. He returns to the physical realm and commands his untrained soldiers to arm themselves with nine conjured Shardblades and Plate that materialize from his connection to these fallen spren, turning the tide of battle as the Fused recoil in shock.

Meanwhile, Renarin and Rlain decide together to free Mishram from her gemstone prison, recognizing that peace requires human and singer cooperation.

Szeth stands empowered by the Honorbearers and speaks the Fifth Ideal of the Skybreakers: that all men should be the law, choosing to follow it by their own decision rather than external compulsion. Feeling whole of body, mind, and heart, he immediately rejects his spren, declaring that Nin's Skybreakers are corrupted and that he will seek dissenters who practice the old ways. As his spren fades, Szeth moves to claim Nightblood, intending to use the sword to destroy something—implied to be his father or sister, who will otherwise remain under Ishar's control.

Ishar intercepts Szeth and, horrified by his abandonment of immortal power, forces a connection of glowing light into him. Through this bond, Ishar shares the accumulated darkness and despair he claims to bear from all the Heralds, overwhelming Szeth with crippling anguish. Kaladin is caught in this connection and experiences crushing depression and self-loathing. Ishar repeats this punishment on Syl, Nale, and all six remaining Honorbearers, forcing them to feel the madness he holds at bay, establishing his dominance through shared suffering.
